The first step in making a piano desk is to take the whole piano apart. I start by removing the front panels from the top and bottom. I then remove the top lid, action, and keys.

The next thing I do is separate the back soundboard and plate from the sides of the cabinet with a hammer, chisel, and gorilla bars. All other parts are then removed.

The next step is to measure for the new wood. I find that it's easier to measure and have the lumber yard make the basic cuts for me. Find a hardwood place or lumber yead that has a pannel saw. Here is my basic pile of wood.

#4

Fit each new piece in it's place without attaching. make neccessary cuts to ensure each piece is square and flush with the existing cabinet.

#5

Attach new shelf to the back of the existing top shelf. This is where your monitor and upper cabinet will attach. I normally us a biscuit jointer and tri-bond glue. The lower part of the shelf will need to be strengthened when it's attached to the cabinet so that the shelf does not sag.

When all parts are cut to size, sand each piece, stain, and finish before the desk is put together. It's also helpful to go ahead and stain any trim that will be attached later. In the past I've stained and finished after the desk has been fully assembled. It's much easier to do it now while the wood easily accessable.

After the parts are cut and finished, it's time to put the desk together and add trim.
